At just over 3,000 SF, this freestanding commercial building is part of the Wintershaven complex on S East Street. It was built in 1983 and has had many commercial uses, including a grocery store, a laundromat, and even a restaurant run by the Winters family for Winstershaven and other neighborhood residents. In 2020, Current Wellness renovated the building, turning it into a vibrant community hub and wellness studio. Steel Projects acquired the property in 2021.
In 2023, Current Wellness received a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance from the City of Raleigh. The project was selected for the Commercial category, which recognizes all types of new retail, office construction, or adaptive use that have a positive impact on the city’s visual environment.
The entire block was built and developed by the Winters Family of Raleigh and specifically John Winters Sr., the namesake for the adjacent John Winters Park, Raleigh’s first Black city councilperson and was one of the first Black members elected to the North Carolina Senate after Reconstruction. In 2024, Steel Projects had the privilege of joining members of the Winters family to rededicate the Winters Family Memorial Garden located next to the building.
