Matt Swean
Construction Project Manager
OF RALEIGH:
Since 2004
FOR RALEIGH:
Matt has called Raleigh home since 2004, after graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career as a carpenter in 2006 with Empire Hardhat Construction, where he honed his skills in historic preservation, material reuse and recycling, and the meticulous art of restoration. His approach to carpentry has been influenced by the particular styles and projects he’s encountered during his time in Raleigh, including many with Ben and the Steel Projects team.
Since joining Steel Projects, Matt's favorite project has been the custom millwork at the Front & Alley Houses, where he enjoyed uncovering original historic layers of the buildings while restoring them with historically-appropriate means, methods, and materials. He takes great pride in custom woodworking, particularly in utilizing existing materials and working with his hands. Matt’s past craftsmanship and restoration expertise is prominently on display at some of Raleigh’s most notable renovated historic properties including the Crabtree-Jones House, The Raleigh Times Bar, and the Prairie Building.
As construction project manager, Matt uses his expertise in adaptive reuse projects and historic preservation to continue to enhance our favorite Raleigh neighborhoods and communities.
When Matt’s not saving historic buildings, he enjoys gardening, live music, and spending time with his daughter.
