According to The National Register of Historic Places, Raleigh funeral home director Charles A. Haywood built and owned this “textbook example of a one-and-a-half-story brick-veneered and stuccoed bungalow” in 1935. The home had fallen to disrepair and was in dire condition when it was purchased in 2012 by Ben and project partners Andrew and Danielle Stewart.
With help from photos provided by the Haywood family, the home underwent a meticulous renovation consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Rehabilitation, earning state and federal historic tax credits. The rehab team, which included future team member Matt Swean, incorporated modern building technology while keeping original historic components intact. The house maintains its original doors and windows, and original maple flooring. Where the floors needed to be patched, the team sourced matching maple hardwoods from Habitat Restore, which happened to be reclaimed pieces of the old William & Mary basketball gym floor. (They left the paint lines in place in one closet.)
The transformation of the Haywood House spurred many other renovation and preservation projects on the block soon after.
